Hi everyone! My name is Tylee Mougeot and I'm currently a senior at the U of A. My major is Microbiology and I will be starting a PhD in Pathobiology next fall. After I finish my degree I plan on working for the CDC and/or WHO based out of an International office (hopefully Barcelona!).

I am a music downloading junkie and I love to dance. My spare time is spent watching soccer (Visca el Barca!) and planning my next adventure abroad. The current escapade in the works is a 3 month summer motorbike trip through Southeast Asia, namely Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

This is my first semester as a F.O.R.C.E. intern for the WRC. I am currently one of the two co-chairs for the Health and Sexuality Committee. I've really enjoyed working on the Health and Sexuality Committee so far and am excited for the rest of our upcoming events this semester!

Meet the Interns: Laura

Hi everyone! My name is Laura Neff and I am a junior at the U of A. I am majoring in Environmental Science with a focus in policy and minoring in Gender and Women's Studies. I am a returning intern from the Spring semester and proud to call myself the co-chair of the F.O.R.C.E film series.

To start off, I was born and raised in Phoenix and lived there through high school. In Phoenix is where I learned of the wonders social justice, though I didn't refer it to that until later. Starting in middle school I worked with a group called Stand & Serve that is based in Tempe. This group was focused on building a more respectful community by teaching youth about the idea and practice of primary prevention (stopping the problem before it happens) to end oppression. This is where I got my start and I continue to work with the youth in this group when I am able to.

How did I get started here do you ask? My freshman year a group of friends and I would make it a point to go to any free movies in the Galleghar when we could and the WRC film series just happened to fit into that category. I loved most, if not all, of the movies that we went to and I continued to go to them even when a few of my friends did not. My sophomore year I decided to sign up to intern with the WRC and loved it, so I decided to continue! F.O.R.C.E has shown me that feminism is not a narrow point of view when it comes to social justice. It can intersect with almost any aspect of human life and I continue to learn more about just how relevant it is in today's society.

With this experience and my major, I plan to become an educated activist in the new environmental justice movement by being an advocate for fair environmental policy that not only helps the environment, but helps people as well.

Leah Eager- Introduction

Hi Everyone!

My name is Leah Eager and I am a junior at the University of Arizona. I am majoring in Economics and minoring in Sociology. I grew up in San Francisco, CA in an apartment and I currently live just 15 minutes north of the city. I have no brothers and sisters and the rest of my extended family lives on the east coast so I primarily spend all of my time with just my mom and dad. Because I grew up in an apartment I always had weird pets while growing up. I was not allowed to have a cat or a dog, so my mom and I got creative and I always ended up having a strange pet. My worst decision was to bring home crayfish that we were studying in my elementary school and keep them in a plastic tub in my room. My mom and I eventually ended up throwing them down the garbage shoot a couple of days later.

When I was younger I was a bit of a tomboy and my favorite possession was a skateboard. I did have a couple of dolls but I always loved my skateboard. One of my favorite things to do is to travel. When I was in elementary school I traveled to Italy with my family for six weeks, we went around Tuscany and the coast. Since then I have returned to Italy twice more and hope to go again sometime soon. I have also been to Jamaica and Israel (this past summer). Israel was amazing and I would love to go back sometime, although I did pick up some Hebrew it was very difficult to communicate in the country.

During my free time, I love to just relax and hang out with friends. School is very stressful and its nice to just have a couple of hours to yourself where you don't have to worry about your next assignment. I also love to horseback ride and I have been riding since the age of five. I haven't found many places out in Tucson to ride but it is something I want to make more time for. I also enjoy hiking out here and I would like to camp on Mt. Lemmon at some point. Since I grew up in a city, I have never gone camping and this is something I would like to do. After college I want to go to the east coast, preferably New York city, and begin working at a corporate job.

Hello!
My name is Erica Goudy, i'm 19, and i'm a sophomore. I am currently a Psychology major with a minor in French. As for right now, I don't have a clue as to what i'm going to do with my life but i'm sure i'll figure it out eventually. I'm originally from California but I grew up in Arizona. A lot of my native Arizonan friends don't like Arizona, but I personally love it here. I grew up in Peoria which is kind of close to Phoenix so I spent a lot of my time downtown. I love my family and my friends and I am the type of person who would rather have good quality friends rather than the quantity. I am definitely a music enthusiast! I love concerts but i'm kind of picky with bands so I don't attend many. The last concerts I attended consisted of Tegan and Sara, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The National, and the Sounds, just to name a few. I hope to go to the Coachella music festival in April with a couple of my friends. I love Tucson because so many awesome bands come and play here!

I Joined F.O.R.C.E. because I felt like it would be a great opportunity to get involved on campus and to be apart of a group of creative, able-bodied women making a difference on campus was also something that attracted me.

I am on the Educational Events committee and the Film Series Committee. I'm really excited to be part of hosting our events and promote what F.O.R.C.E has to offer to our campus!

Hi,
My name is Eva Izhieman and I am currently a senior at the University of Arizona. My major is Anthropology and my focus is Archaeology. I love learning about the past and relating it to the present.

Besides feminism, I have a passion for music. I love going to concerts and listening to new (and old) artists. I also play the flute, piccolo, and tenor sax.

This is the 3rd year that I have been a part of the WRC/FORCE. I am currently one of the student directors and the committee chair for the Educational Programming Committee. I love being a part of FORCE and being involved on campus!

FORCE has helped shape who I am as a person and through my involvement I learn more about women and other marginalized groups and the issues that surround us every day.

I'm excited for this year and hope to see FORCE continue to grow and be an important organization on campus and in our community.

I choose to come to the U of A because it was a great place to be and everyone that was here during orientation loved it and couldn't wait to be an Arizona Wildcat. I love sports, meeting new people, and spending time with friends and family.

Why did I join F.O.R.C.E?
There are many misconceptions when it comes to describing feminist groups. I believe that women come together not to bring up radical movements throughout society, but women come together to support, teach, and educate one another. We as college women come together to inform other students about resources, possibility, and potentially. We also come find that excluding opinions or perspectives never leads anyone anywhere, so for us, the women of our future it is important to keep and open mind but yet set forth our principles and what we represent. For me it was important to be a part of a group, but not just any group. It was important to be a part of the group of women leaders that come together and promote a worthy cause that has the ability to advocate change and promote resources for young women around the U of A campus.

Hello to the wonderful readers of this blog! My name is Anastasia Freyermuth. For those who may have followed the Women’s Resource Center’s blog in previous semesters, you may notice that I am a returning intern. However, for this coming semester I am returning as a new Co-Director for our newly re-named student branch of the WRC, F.O.R.C.E (Feminist Organized to Resist, Create, and Empower). I am thrilled and honored by this new position and hope to continue the efforts made by both groups to bring attention to gender equity issues within the Tucson community and abroad. My excitement surrounding this new role also stems from the fact that I find it to be a perfect equilibrium of academic study and practice! By this I mean that, being a Gender and Women’s Studies major, I often read several didactic and important forms of scholarly research delving into the multifaceted aspects that make up oppression(s) with little reference of what grassroots work I can do in order to uproot such systemic injustices. Fortunately though, the Women’s Resource Center has offered me such an opportunity, and with my other position as Co-Chair of the Film Series, I hope to attain the necessary skills to fully realize my dream of one day becoming a feminist filmmaker. Nevertheless, the amazing opportunities provided by the WRC/F.O.R.C.E could not be fully realized without an amazing Director and devoted interns. With respect to the former, I am grateful to introduce our new Director, Krista Millay! As some of you may recall, our remarkable Director of the past year and a half, Lori Von Buggenum, went on to achieve greater things over the summer. Thankfully, Krista immediately stepped up to the plate and has provided some fresh insight on how to grow the WRC. Possessing such a great Director only adds to our remarkable new intern team at F.O.R.C.E. Having so many new faces and unique insights has been insurmountably beneficial for the establishment of F.O.R.C.E. My dream then for this semester would be to have F.O.R.C.E. be in the trenches, if you will, battling the numerous forms of oppression affecting both the personal and political; to become a necessary “force” within the most essential form of social justice, activism.

Hellooooo, I'm Marisa Skelpsa-Muñoz. My last names are Lithuanian and Mexican, and that is my lovely mixture (with a little German there too). I'm nineteen going on twenty, I've lived in Arizona my whole life (mostly in Phoenix) and I just started my junior year here at the U of A. My major is Spanish translation and interpretation and I have a minor in Portuguese. I've always been really jealous of multilingual people, so I'm picking a few languages I like and making it my goal in life to become fluent in them. I love to travel. I've been to Spain, Italy, the Dominican Republic, I just got back from a summer in Guanajuato, Mexico and I plan on going to Brazil to study abroad next summer. Almost everywhere I go, I fall in love with some part of the place and decide I want to stay and live there forever, so right now I really want to be in Mexico. Therefore, I have no idea where I really want to live or what kind of career thing I'll end up wanting to do or just where my life will go in general, but right now it's awesome trying to find out. This is my first semester interning with F.O.R.C.E. and I'm on the educational programming and health and sexuality committees. I'm really excited about all of our events and being a part of this amazing group of awesome feminists. YAY!

My name is Wendy and this is my third year here at the University of Arizona. I have lived in Tucson my whole life. My major is Family Studies and Human Development. I am in the process of organizing my minor, which will be focused on Human Sexuality.

I look forward to being one of the two Co-Chairs for the Health and Sexuality committee within the student organization F.O.R.C.E. this semester. Sexual health education and awareness is something that I feel strongly about. Part of what the Health and Sexuality Committee does is give Sexual Education College Style (S.E.C.S.) presentations around campus. I hope to help educate others and myself, and encourage sexually transmitted infection testing and prevention.

I am proud to say that I am an intern for F.O.R.C.E. which is the student organization for the Women's Resource Center at the University of Arizona. They are empowering organizations that advocate for gender equity and social justice, as well as promote health and wellness. Education and knowledge is power, and open discussion of topics such as sexuality is necessary for good physical and mental health. I am thankful for this opportunity and I will strive to be a valuable asset to F.O.R.C.E. and the W.R.C.!

My goal was to break the monotony of "Hello, my name is," yet my exploration in exciting introductions emerges futile. So here it goes- hello, my name is Kelly Ancharski. I am a freshman, born and raised in Tucson, Arizona (although since then I have traveled beyond the imperil continental United States, mainly to Europe and North America). In the impending years, my life plans have vaguely appeared in the forefront of my mind, an outline that begins with receiving my undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona in political science and French with concentrations in international relations and literature respectively. Ultimately, the Peace Corps and the United Nations are fitting establishments to create and illuminate the struggles of a conflicting world, built on the shoulders of the forgotten. Ties, the formation of connections/understanding, stem from family; delivered into a line of growing half-Irish children, my family is large by comparison- immediately I have two older sisters and a younger brother, but extended, well lets just say the number is exponentially growing. Life, much like the formulaic beginnings of these discussions, is seemingly mundane without a passion, gifts that lift the soul into a euphoria- reading, traveling, and most importantly dancing are the personal breaks in the ordinary. Dance has been a running stream through my life since the age of three. Through the breaks and cramming my toes into pint size wood planks (better know as pointe shoes), dance has remained a breath of air, filling the lungs and heart in tandem. In the literary cannon, books complete the hole of imagination; at the top of my favorites include "Crime and Punishment," "The Road," "As You Like It," "Les Misérables," and "Harry Potter." I have always been fascinated with French culture and the atmosphere instituted in the beauty of transcendentalist thinking (as the French would say- Je vois la vie en rose). With international relationships and globalization so fundamental to the evolving tides, the communication and acceptance (or at least knowledge) between younger generations, a fusion of race, sex, and gender polarity, connecting on the waves of the Internet, is the beginnings of a bolstered universal affiliation.

That is the introduction, but now the importance of feminism; the reality of historical injustice that plagues, not only the minorities or the religiously inclined, but the state of gender, the implications that warp humanities cognitive load, maintained by illusory correlation to produce the connotation that feminism is elusive in thought, as well as practice, with a heavy perception of grating females, defying the proscriptive convention, fabricating the raucous sound, resonating in the crevasse of depravity. The feminist terminology continues to be simply forgotten; the terminology of conviction, pushed aside by the partisan movements of seemingly just principles destined for success. While the inequality, a correlation based on the lack of awareness and action, has visible divisions of insight; the archival turnings of the world illuminate the mass periods of female involvement and a disregarded of recognition, countered with the elegance, a poised exposition, true feminism, pouring from the tips of the alleged foolish, repugnant women. Despite the fallacies, the truth of women, with the additions of gender and sexual equality, continues to scatter the portrayal of Earth’s culture.

My 5 year old brother & I

Hey, my name’s Kemi, I’m a new intern for F.O.R.C.E. I’m a sophomore, but it’s my first year here at the University of Arizona (I transferred from a school in Ohio). I’m a pre-med student majoring in Gender & Women’s Studies, with a minor in Chemistry. My strong belief in reproductive justice has made me interested in becoming an OB/GYN.

So, why did I join F.O.R.C.E.?

I’m really passionate about women’s issues, and equality. (I think I’m going to have to thank the Spice Girls for instilling the notion of “Girl Power” in me.) As a child of immigrants, I’m especially interested in how women are treated in different cultures, and how feminism has cross-sections with many aspects of society. Despite my major, I still don’t know that much about feminism, so what better way to learn even more about it than to immerse myself in it this semester? I also wanted to get involved in campus one way or another, especially as a new student.

Feminism isn’t the only thing I’m into. I’m obsessed with politics and spent some time working on the 2010 midterm elections (I’m pumped for 2012!). I also am very passionate about immigration reform and the Invisible Children Organization. When I’m not doing anything related to those things, I spend my time reading, knitting, and watching television series on Netflix.

Our biggest announcement this Fall is the introduction of the ASUA-recognized student organization FORCE (Feminists Organized to Resist, Create, and Empower). You will see FORCE around campus, doing activism, education, and programming, in collaboration with the WRC. We have an amazing team this semester – nine super-skilled interns, plus two passionate student Co-Directors (Eva and Anastasia), as well as our first-ever WRC Graduate Assistant Ruth Alminas.

It is going to be an exciting year. The interns and co-directors are full of energy and exciting ideas, meaning that we will have lots of fun events to inspire and challenge you this year.

Kicking off the Fall semester is the first in our Film Series lineup. On September 7, FORCE will present Itty Bitty Titty Committee, followed by discussion with the Vagina Warriors and dialogue with the audience. Our films are always *FREE* and are shown on the first and third Wednesdays of September, October, and November, in the Gallagher Theatre at 7pm.

Hello all! My name is Kristen Ribich and I am the Women's Resource Center's first Oasis Liaison! What this means is that I primarily intern with the Oasis Program for Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence, but I also spend time with the WRC and all of their lovely interns to keep communication between the two organizations clear! With the WRC, I am on the Health and Sexuality Committee and work with others to promote sex ed, STI awareness, and sexual assault awareness.

I am finishing my final semester at the University of Arizona, with a degree in International Studies, focusing on Development in South Asia. I am currently working on my honors thesis which examines India's legislation on sex trafficking, gauging how effective they are and how well they are being implemented. In my life, I aim to engage others in the issue of sex trafficking and human trafficking worldwide, and at the WRC and on campus, I hope to educate others about safe sex, as well as spread awareness about a variety of issues with the aim to lower violence against women.

Hi-lo! My name is Kate and I'm a senior at the U of A, going on my third and final semester with the Women's Resource Center. I am one of the Film Series Committee chairs, where I commit my life and my pride to putting on shows for campus and the Tucson community to experience, learn, and enjoy the feminism that I know.

I study History and Anthropology as my minor, with an emphasis in revolutions and women's studies. After the school day I like to veg-out with my room mates, watch excessive amounts of Arrested Development, The Office, Malcolm in the Middle, and the various Sci-Fi movies. Feminism, to me, is the ability to enjoy yourself wherever you may be and whoever you may be, without discrimination and without judgement. This makes the tasks of feminism broad and the allies numerous as I seek out ways to educate myself, my peers, my family, and my community about issues facing men and women alike in the pursuit of feminist happiness!

Hi! My name is Elizabeth Dake and I am a senior at the U of A. This is my second semester as a WRC intern, and this spring I will serve as the Health & Sexuality Committee chair. I am a History and Religious Studies double major and have minors in Gender & Women's Studies and Sociology. This semester I am finishing my honors thesis-- Teaching Morality: The Influence of the Religious Right on Sex Education and the Gendered Consequences of Abstinence-Only.

The Health & Sexuality Committee focuses on the Sex Ed, College Style program. It is a huge privilege to be involved with a program as popular as SECS-- I believe that if our generation is knowledgeable about sexual responsibility, as well as sexual health, then the future of sex education, STI awareness, and the recognition and prevention of sexual assault will look very different. Through such programs, the mysteries and stigmas surrounding sex, STIs, and sexual assault can be illuminated and undone. I am looking forward to our upcoming SECS presentations, and am so excited about all the other amazing programs the WRC is offering this semester!

Hello everyone! My name is Daniel Curiel, I'm 20 years old and have grown up in Arizona my entire life. I'm a History major with a minor in Prelaw at the University of Arizona. My interests include international politics, futbol, jamming out on my drumset, guitar and keyboard, and basically learning about the world and all the beautiful people that comprise it. The Southwest has definitely shaped who I am and what I hope to achieve in the future. My parents are both Mexican immigrants, my mom coming from the North and my dad from the South. Because I'm a first generation child of immigrants, I grew up speaking both Spanish and English, a skill that has served very handy here in the Arizona-Sonoran desert. I'm very interested in U.S.-Mexico relations, especially along the border since it's always been my home. Through the course of my life I have witnessed the fierce militarization of the border which has only empowered me to seek solutions based on social justice and equality. These interests in human rights led me to a very important movement, the feminist movement. I became a feminist every since I realized I loathed double-standards and backwards thinking. Most importantly, a very special woman made me fall in love with the theory and the good it would do for the world. I hope to bring my knowledge of feminist theory and social justice into action as an intern here at the WRC. I'm hopeful we will move forward in the struggle for equality!

I grew up in Phoenix and worked on many social issues with a non profit called Peer Solutions for many years. Now I am proud to continue my work in Tucson! As a freshmen living on campus, I couldn't wait until each new WRC film came out and would use those Wednesday nights as a friend's night out. Hi everybody !

My name is Angelique Owczarzak, and although my family name sounds Polish, I'm definitively French ! I come from Paris more precisely, and despite of all my love for my hometown, in 2010 I chose to migrate to the USA for a year ... The question that people always ask me is WHY ARIZONA ?? Good question. Actually, I needed change ( and I got it ! ). I thought that if I wanted to know better America, I had to go to the deep, deep part of it. Since I also love beautiful landscapes and was curious about the Wild Wild West legends, Arizona proved to be the ideal destination, didn't it ? And let me tell you : I don't have any regrets. I have fallen in love with Tucson and its nice people, much nicer than Parisian people !
My major is political and social sciences and I have always been interested by feminism and political activism. This year was thus an opportunity to get committed while improving my English. I decided then to apply for an internship at the Women's Resource Center, and now I'm writing a presentation on me ! What I really appreciate about the Women's Resource Center in UofA is that I have the chance to defend women's rights while respecting everyone, including men. I also like the fact that the Women's Resource Center offers services, events and programs, which is a little bit different from the feminist organizations whose goal is only talking, talking about women's issues without acting.
Although I come back to France in June, I want to give a lot of myself to this organization this semester, as well as I can. Women in Europe are in some ways and sometimes kind of different from American women, and that is for me an opportunity to learn more about American women's issues.
Sorry for my English mistakes and I'm impatient to begin this semester with the Women's Resource Center's team ! A tres vite !

Salutations to the readers of this blog. By reading this, you have either consciously or sub-conciously developed sympathies for the feminist struggle. This may come as a surprise to certain readers, but never fear, feminism is developing into a very inclusive movement.

Due to my own allegiance to feminism, it is important to explain where I am from. By doing so, I can better explain where my personal visioning of the world originates.

My life began in Des Moines Iowa. According to Jack Kerouac, "The prettiest girls in the world live in Des Moines." Though I do not believe entirely in Kerouac's assertion I did meet incredible women there after my family's three year stint in Montana (my father was in the Air Force at the time).

This ability to meet these phenomenal women was because of one of the most phenomenal woman I know, my mother. Despite being eighteen when she had me and vulnerable to the expectations that befall wives and mothers, my mother raised me in a household where the arts were necessary to a fulfilling life and that difference should be celebrated not condemned. My mother, being a poet, had been involved in writers' workshops in the Des Moines area and helped to create the first ever Des Moines Slam team. As a result, I become acquainted with a multiplicity of strong women early in my life.

At ten, my family decided to move to Casa Grande Arizona. The immediate culture shock was often unsettling. However, I would never trade those experiences. Growing up in one of the more economically depressed areas of the town, I learned the overall disdain for the white middle class, a category my family was a member of. This lesson, as difficult as it was to learn, would never had been taught if I had continued to live in the comfortable whiteness of the Midwest. Consequently, I have developed insights into various cultures, beliefs I never would have encountered in Iowa.

But my education is not over. Currently, I am a student at the University of Arizona double majoring in Gender and Women's Studies and Media Arts, and minoring in Religious Studies with the aspiration to contribute factual representations of women in the media. The classes I have been fortunate enough to take have informed me immensely about the, to use a term created by Kimberle Crenshaw, "intersectionality" of people's experiences. Because of this I have learned of the pitfalls of feminism and how my white skin carries a level of privilege that is used as a form of oppression over numerous people. Therefore, I intend to be a member of activist organizations that work to abolish the systems of oppression for all people. I feel I am stepping in the right direction with my involvement in the Women's Resource Center.

The WRC has been a major impact on my life, especially the Breast Party!!! Hi, I'm Liz Mitchell, and I'm back!!! I was a new intern for the Fall of 2010 and now I am returning for the Spring 2011 semester. I am junior with a Marketing major and a German Studies minor. I am no longer serving on the Film Series committee but I can tell you I am their biggest fan! This semester I am solely on the Health and Sexuality Committee so look for me at the presentations. :)

After the two+ years at the University of Arizona, I can look back at the student organizations that have improved my experience here – the Women’s Resource Center is one of them. When I was a freshman living on campus I looked forward to the Film Series every other week as both an entertainment activity and to discover more about the issues presented in the films. I also attended SECS and was able to gain knowledge about sexual health that I had not heard of from my conservative family. The Women’s Resource Center has given me invaluable information from trustworthy sources. Now I want to give back to the organization through my internship! Let's have a good year!

Hi! My name is Elizabeth Dake and I am a senior at the U of A. This is my first semester as a WRC intern, and I can't wait to start my work on the Health & Sexuality Committee. I am a History and Religious Studies double major and have minors in Gender & Women's Studies and Sociology. This semester I will be preceptoring the Sociology of Gender class and starting my honors thesis-- Teaching Morality: The Influence of the Religious Right on Sex Education and the Consequences of Abstinence-Only.

Throughout college, I wanted to be involved with the WRC, but never felt that I was in a position to help other women. Although I was passionate about women's issues and social change, I felt that without solving all of my own problems first, I would be unable to help others. As I read more works by feminist authors, I began to see that the people involved in feminism were people who were brought to the movement through their own experiences with oppression and discrimination I finally realized that by remaining silent, I was delaying the possibility of change. This year, I intend to remember daily that both public policy and individual action have material and emotional consequences-- to delay change is to prolong the oppression and real suffering of others.

I am most excited about the Sex Ed, College Style program. It is a huge privilege to be involved with a program as popular as SECS-- I believe that if our generation is knowledgeable about sexual responsibility, as well as sexual health, then the future of sex education, STI awareness, and the recognition and prevention of sexual assault will look very different. Through such programs, the mysteries and stigmas surrounding sex, STIs, and sexual assault can be illuminated and undone. I am looking forward to my first SECS presentation, and am so excited about all the other amazing programs the WRC is offering this semester!

Hi there! My name is Michael Webb and I am a concurrent student here at Pima Community College and the University of Arizona. I enjoy an active lifestyle, have two dogs, and love spontaneity! I am rather excited about this because I feel it will bring me closer to electing a major while simultaneously opening my cultural perspectives. My personal goal throughout this experience is to keep an open mind on topics that may otherwise make me uncomfortable or awkward. Hopefully, with the help of honest discussion about these kinds of subjects will make me more knowledgeable, well rounded, and culturally diverse.

Through discussion with Lori pertaining to the possibilities and opportunities available to WRC interns, I found that the WRC is the place I want to be this semester! I intend to be a member of the sexual health committee and also take on a portion of the webmaster responsibilities. My involvement will hopefully bring me closer to electing a major while simultaneously opening my cultural perspectives. My personal goal throughout this experience is to keep an open mind on topics that may otherwise make me uncomfortable or awkward. Hopefully, with the help of honest discussion about these kinds of subjects I will become more knowledgeable, well rounded, and culturally diverse. My excitement is immense and I cannot wait to start making a difference through this outlet.

I am 22 years old and I identify as a homosexual. I became open with my sexuality when I was a 16-year-old junior at Palo Verde high School here in Tucson. For some, it is hard to understand something that is foreign to you or differs from the normal. I can relate on some level; however, it is difficult to be what is misunderstood. My mother was raised by a Southern Baptist preacher, and my father just retired from the Armed Forces. At first, there was a great deal of emotional stress, but now things are much more positive. Acceptance has been a gradual process, but fortunately, I have a very loving family that is willing to make an attempt.

Coming out has allowed me to grow into the young adult I am today. As a student, I am involved with a couple of campus LGBT activism/equality groups. I am the current president of the Omega Chapter of Delta Lambda Phi National Social Fraternity for gay, bi, and progressive men. Having this role enables me to steer the direction of my organization and influence the experience of my brothers. The UofA’s “Pride Alliance” puts on several events and I sometimes volunteer and participate. I am also a sitting delegate of the “LGBT Campus Coalition” made up of all the leaders of the LGBT groups on campus.

For four years, I was a member of the UofA’s marching band, and for the past two summers I participated in DCI as a member of the Color Guard in the Blue Knights. Drum corps (DCI) is the most enthralling experience I have ever faced in my life.

Aside from that, I have been a Tucsonan since 2000, but I also lived in Great Britain for 5 years prior. Most of my family is from the east coast, specifically South Carolina. I consider myself lucky because I have visited at least 30 of the 50 states in the U.S.

Some of my hobbies include, but are not limited to: volleyball, hiking, parties, Facebook, dogs, DCI, BBQ’s, social justice, weather and much more.

Hello everyone! I am so looking forward to working with the Women's Resource Center this year and meeting all you!!

My name is Cazia Glen. I'm a new intern with the WRC and I'm going to be involved with SECS and the Educational Programming Committee this semester. I'm a double major in sociology and psychology and plan to go to graduate school. During my time at the U of A I've been active in quite a few groups, including the Sociology Club, Psi Chi, Sociologists for Women in Society and the last two years I've been junior-editor of Persona magazine (U of A's undergraduate literary magazine). I've always supported the WRC's mission and I feel it's definitely about time I contribute more directly to it!

Though I've been fascinated by culture and society, and how each has the ability to change, since I attended an international school in Europe for high school, it wasn't until college that I really began to specifically unravel the complex connections between power relations, normativity, sex and gender. I would say my education thus far has played a key role in developing my personal sense of feminism. Though I obviously want to change many things about the way society currently operates (particularly in how people tend to evaluate each other based on socially constructed categories), I remain optimistic in regards to positive change for women.

Hey there! My name is Julia Purdy and I am a third year student at the University of Arizona. I am a double major in Religious Studies and Gender & Women's Studies with minors in Art History and Spanish. After I complete my undergraduate studies, my goal is to join the Peace Corps. I am a very passionate and conscientious person with a lot of interests. I enjoy quiet time and company, but I (for some reason) am very fond of running around and being very busy- I don't know what I would do without my planner!
This semester I am the Outreach Coordinator and Historian for the Women's Resource Center as a way to more directly contribute to the changes that I want to see in the world. I have always been upset by the inequalities that I have experienced, read about or seen, but I did not know how to label my feelings until I came to university and learned the meaning of the term "feminism". This knowledge has changed my life and given me a basis for the work that I do, inspiring me to be active in making this world better. I am very ardent about the work that the women's movement has done and continues to do and am so excited to have the opportunity to contribute! What we are doing at the WRC is appreciable and helping to create a more egalitarian world for everyone!

Hello. My name is Tai Dietrich and I am a third semester intern at the ASUA Women's Resource Center at the University of Arizona. I am a Religious Studies and Political Science double major and I am currently the Fundraising Coordinator for the WRC. I am also employed by the Religious Studies Department at the U of A as an undergraduate grader for the course RELI 210: Religion in the American Experience.

My personal feminism has been shaped around my experiences as a disgruntled female with a growing dissatisfaction with "the way things are". My hope is that the feminist movement will help to create a world in which all human beings will be judged according to their values, accomplishments, and the content of their character as opposed to their race, gender, sexual orientation, class, or any other personal identification.

This semester, my primary function within the WRC is grant writing and funding acquisition. I am also a member of the Educational Programming Committee. In previous semesters, I have been a Film Series intern as well as the Film Series Committee Chair.

I look forward to working with all of you this semester and if anyone, for any reason, needs assistance, I am definitely an available resource.

My name is Cindi Azuogu. I am a freshman at the U of A studying Physiology and have a minor in Creative Writing. I plan on going to med school and continuing my studies in Pediatrics because I love children. I am also new intern to the Women's Resource Center and already loving it. In high school, I was the weird (but totally butt-kicking) girl who discovered this awesome thing called feminism and started the Young Feminists Coalition, our pro-feminist group on campus that everyone secretly wanted to join but were too afraid. I have always been very active in the LGBTQ and Feminist Community. In my Senior year, I was the president of the Gay Straight Alliance, which was also the year the Westboro Baptist Church came to protest on our campus. We told them right where to stick their signs!

Ever since, I have been participating in any act of social justice I can since I have a strong passion for it. Just this year, I have joined the Vagina Warriors for the 2010 presentation of the Vagina Monologues and will continue to combat the threat of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

It has only been a semester of school and it promises to be an amazing 4 years here!

Hi my name is Jessica Whitson and I'm one of the new SECS interns at the WRC. I'm a junior currently majoring in Physiology with a minor in Chemistry and Spanish. I say currently because I think that's changing at the end of this semester. I'm going to major in Spanish! I have a passion for several things in life: Mexican food, sex education, grammar and spelling, Myers Brigg Type Indicator (ENFP for those of you who know what I'm talking about), the Beatles, scrapbooking, equal rights for all, and Facebook (not necessarily in that order). I'm a little crazy, very outgoing and hopefully if you see me around you'll say hi. I love meeting new people. I currently work for the Walt Disney Company out of their Florida location and yes, I am that crazy Disney girl. But here in Arizona, I work as an in-home senior caregiver.

This semester I'm really looking forward to getting started with things in our Sex Ed College Style program. I'm hoping to make a lasting impression with those students that we're able to speak to. I'm also looking forward to learning more about who I am, making some awesome friends and lasting connections with everyone.

HIV Testing!!!

The Women's Resource Center in collaboration with Pima County Health Department, Campus Health, Student Health Advisory Committee, and Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation provided free HIV Testing on Campus today for the second time this school year!

The testing was an extreme success. 56 people were tested, and 20 were wait-listed. This is more than double the last testing.

The WRC was also featured in an article today in the Wildcat.

This was a huge success, and here is to hoping it continues on in the future!

Dr. LaFayette review, and a Poll!

First a poll on the WRC (Women's Resource Center) that was in today's Wildcat!

Would you support a student fee to pay for a full time WRC faculty director?

There are a few problems with this question though, and that's the fact that it is a bit misleading. The WRC is petitioning the Fee Allocation Board for the funds for a new director. That is the board that disperses the student fee that is paid at the beginning of each semester. A new fee wouldn't need to be assessed. Also the poll doesn't say what the WRC stands for, and often the Women's Resource Center is referred to by its full name.

That aside, there was a rather delightful article in the paper about the Dr. LaFayette conference that the Women's Resource Center co-sponsored to have on the University of Arizona campus!

Semona Igama

Semona Igama is currently a junior majoring in Microbiology at the University of Arizona. She will be closely working with committees such as sex ed., self defense, and safe walk. Semona recently transfered from Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands, which is a beautiful island in the Pacific. Google it! There she was apart of a teen program called Teen Talk, which was sponsored by the local Public School System. The program aimed to educate students in high school as well as in junior high to deal with topics such as sex/health education, violence and suicide prevention, and among other teen issues, LGBTQ awareness. She is excited to take on the next level of sex/health education by becoming an active member of the Women's Resource Center, and sharing what she has learned back home while learning something new. She enjoys being apart of an energetic group who work hard, laugh out loud, and embrace women strength.

What's up? I'm Xavier, and this semester I joined the WRC for the very first time, so like anything new to anybody, I am very excited. I don't have a picture to post in here, and I don't feel like writing a thousand words (as these would most likely be nonsensical), yet here is what you need to know about me: I don't much care about my future plans right now, so instead of changing the future I seek to change the present. This is why I joined the WRC. I have a couple of majors. And I have a job. But to me those things are only a distant second and third to finding tacit adventures waiting on the road. "What I Want My Words To Do To You" offers an unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, consisting of 15 women, most of whom were convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women delve into their pasts and explore the nature of their crimes and the extent of their own culpability.

The Women’s Resource Center in collaboration with the Vagina Warriors presents "What I Want My Words To Do To You." The film documents both the wrenching personal journeys undertaken by female inmates of a high security prison in New York. Through a series of exercises and discussions with Vagina Monologues creator, Eve Ensler, the women find the words that tell their own stories, and the power of those words to move the outside world.

The Aggressives

The lives of six “aggressive” lesbians who strive to be as masculine as possible in lifestyle and appearance. From prison to the underground ball scene, where lesbians compete for lead “AG” status, this film reveals a largely hidden subculture.

No Secret Anymore

Del and Phyllis creating coalitions that the prevailing belief that lesbians were illegal, immoral and sick. Phyllis and Del did the groundbreaking work on lesbian mothers, sex education, family violence, and more.

A documentary that investigates the recent rise in the “whatever” phenomenon exploring the changing sexual landscape of America in a bizarre and hilarious road trip, pursuing the bisexual fad. It takes viewers on every adventure from sex parks to swinger’s parties to tag with the kids.

Playing Unfair

Coverage of women’s sports lags far behind men’s, and focuses on female athlete’s femininity and sexuality over their achievement on the court and field. While female athleticism challenges gender norms, women athletes are still shown in tradition roles that reaffirm their femininity.

Daughter of Danang

In 1975, as the Vietnam War was wending, thousands of orphans and Amerasian children were brought to the United States as part of “Operation Babylift.” Heidi Bub, a married woman now living in with kids, and her Vietnamese mother, Mai Thi Kim, reunite after being separated for 22 years.

Made in L.A.

Made in L.A. follows the remarkable story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from trendy clothing retailer Forever 21. In intimate observational style, Made in L.A. reveals the impact of the struggle on each woman’s life as they are gradually transformed by the experience.

A revealing and provocative look into the deep secrets and deep pockets of the pro-life movement. This documentary weaves a riveting story from more that 70 exclusive interviews with pro-life activisits and seldom-seen archival footage to document one of the most controversial social movements in American history.

Brigid Blazek

Brigid is a senior studying Public Health with a minor in English. She is excited to be graduating this May and is looking forward to life after college! Brigid hopes to work with AmeriCorps after graduation and then later obtain her Master's in Public Health with an emphasis in Urban Communities.

Brigid is currently an Intern for the WRC and will be working with the Planning and Events committee to bring different awareness issues and events to the campus community. In the past, Brigid has helped organize The Vagina Monologues and Take Back the Night and is looking forward to future events she can help bring to campus and the Tucson community.

Ashley is currently a junior majoring in women studies and sociology. She interns with the WRC on the Tabling and Outreach Committee and plans to become involved with grant writing. She has been actively involved with the Tucson Community through working with the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation over the past 2 years. In working with SAAF Ashley has been able to expand her knowledge on how to get individuals excited and involved for events such as AIDS Walk and is looking forward to doing the same for WRC events. Ashley’s goals for the WRC are to help obtain a paid director so that the WRC can become a long-standing organization on campus and to get the student body attending all WRC events. Ashley sees the WRC as a way for students to come together and make a positive change for the future.

Raquel is a Film Series and Long-Term Development Intern who also serves on the Historian Committee by working on the WRC scrapbook. She works directly with teachers, students, and other departments regarding the WRC’s contribution to the community. She is also in charge of making sure students get the necessary credit for class from films instructors have indicated are a supplement to their curriculum. Raquel also works on campus with Residence Life: Undergraduate Housing, as a student office assistant. She is current sophomore studying Political Science, Women’s Studies, and Spanish. This year Raquel is performing in the Vagina Monologues as well as dancing competitively with the UA Ballroom club. Raquel’s goal is to see the WRC develop into a professionalized center and gain a paid director as well as become a more prevalent resource on campus. She is a passionate activist who loves to advocate for social justice in everyday life and hopes this experience will make the community grow to be more diverse and tolerant.

The ASUA Women's Resource Center, Planned Parenthood, and the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership are proud to show "The Education of Shelby Knox." This film addresses many timely issues surrounding abstinence-only versus comprehensive sex education through following Shelby Knox as she challenges her local community and urges them to incorporate medially-accurate comprehensive sexual health education into Texas high schools. Through this process, Shelby confronts her conflicting values, as well as the ideologies of her state, religion and family. Following the film, Shelby Knox will answer questions and facilitate a discussion.

HIV Testing!

A very successful HIV Testing event was held today in CSIL. The Women's Resource Center, CSIL, SAAF, and AIDS Safe all collaborated to bring about this incredibly important cause, Free HIV Testing.

The event had a total of 27 tests administered, with another 42 people on a wait list to be seen.

These numbers show that there is a need for testing of this kind on campus!

"Turquoise Rose" with Guest Speaker Natasha Johnson

Nov. 18, 6 p.m., Gallagher Theater

A coming-of age-story that follows a Native American college student named Turquoise Rose as she begrudgingly forgoes a trip to Europe with her friends to return to the Navajo reservation and take care of her ailing grandmother. Through this experience, Turquoise comes to appreciate her Navajo heritage and ancestry. This film will be followed by a Q & A with the film's star, Natasha Johnson.

The forum was last night and was a smashing success. A large group showed for the forum, and many stayed for the reception after the forum to speak to the panelists and other audience members.

In this documentary, Twenty-two women – most topless, all candid – reveal
how their breasts have shaped their lives, from puberty to sex to motherhood
and beyond. Interspersed throughout the film are precious archival gems,
including a racy 1920s cartoon, a 1950s beauty pageant and a 1970s bra
commercial.

After the film Erin Russ from Southern Arizona Gender Alliance will discuss her
experiences with her breasts as a transgender woman, TC Tolbert from Wingspan
will share his experiences as a transgender man, and Kait will
discuss her unique breast stories. Panelists will then facilitate a discussion
and answer questions from audience members.

My name is Jessica Mena, but everyone calls me Mena!
I’m currently an outreach and development intern and a SAFE walker. This is my first semester with the WRC :) I laugh a lot and smile occasionally ...weird combo huh? I Love LOVE rainy days! My interests consist of walking in the rain, kickboxing, texting, reading, sleeping, trying new things, i like to stay in and go out:), a good movie, chillaxing, laughing uncontrollably, exploring new places, doing strange things, having a good conversation, listening to a great story, TRAVELING!!! and sooooo much more :)I l love music and literally all kinds..no one would want my iPod;) Music is such a great art form.

I love my family dearly, but I don't get to see them much ( my little cousins are my life), I am a senior and pursuing a degree in family studies and human development. I am always super busy, but it keeps life interesting:) I want to do a lot of things in my life ...and I'm going to let passion drive me to my career, because if what I do doesn't make me happy then what will.

Hello everyone! I'm the Intern Coordinator and Development Intern this fall at the WRC. It's my second semester interning, and I spent the summer at the WRC helping adjust to the new space and organizing all the awesome resources in our library. Which, by the way, you should check out a book if you haven't already! There are some really fabulous new ones, and some great older ones as well.

I'm a senior, and my major is Political Science. However, Women's Studies is my favorite department and my minor, and Spanish is my other minor. I've been around for awhile, but I think the term super-senior is inappropriately snarky! This semester, I hope to teach grantwriting, help interns with whatever they need, and balance work and play.

I love reading books by Michelle Tea and Anais Nin, and I hope one day to publish my sex-positive manifesto and make everyone understand that feminism is super-relevant. I also love to cook vegetarian feasts for friends, and sew my own clothes. Be on the lookout for my DIY workshops this semester!

Live! Nude! Girls! Unite!

The Women's Resource Center's Film Series continues this Wednesday with Live Nude Girls Unite. This critically acclaimed documentary follows a group of San Francisco exotic dancers who decide to unionize to gain better wages and sick pay and to protect themselves against secret customer videotapes. Julia Query, a dancer at the Lusty Lounge, leads the unionization effort as the workers sort out their demands and go through the difficulties of bargaining with the union-busting law firm their managers’ hire. Speakers from the Sex Workers Outreach Project will be attending to answer questions and discuss the film and it's issues.

Hello! Hello! Hello! I'm Brianne Richmond, my WRC internship consist of me working with Safe Walk and on the outreach committee. I really focused on increasing visibility and diversifying the WRC! This is my first semester as an intern and I’ll be around all year and I’m really looking forward to it! Hopefully you’ll get tired of seeing me because that means I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing ;)!

I am a senior at the University of Arizona; I’ll be getting my diploma in Family Studies and Human Development with an emphasis on diversity, women, and children! I eventually want to get my Masters in Social Work and open the coolest non-profit organization in the whole world!

In my spare time I tend to “fake” study. I have a short attention span and somehow my hand gravitates towards my phone and I end up wasting my time doing really fun things with my friends, only to remember at like 3:00am that I have a lot of work to do! Most people think I’m shy until they see me out with my family or my friends then they see the real me and think I’m totally loud and crazy. I love bright colors, shopping, shoes, purses, music, and dancing! My favorite thing in the world is spending time with my nieces and nephews but singing off key really loud is probably my favorite hobby next to reading!

Hi, I'm Ashley. I am a Fundraising and Outreach Intern at the Women's Resource Center.

In my free time (when sleeping), I like to rock climb, eat at Ghandi's, and take long walk on the beach with my dog, Spot....

Since I've been in Tucson, I have spend most of my time at EON, a youth lounge downtown. There I met some of the most inspiring people, and they are part of the reason why I have pursued the Women's Resource Center and GRL.

That's pretty much what's exciting. I am, also, a Sociology and Business major, and I work at the Daily Wildcat, as an Assistant Accountant. So, just drop by and check me out! :-)

It's...Annie Spaghetti

I don't know how I got the nickname, but that is who I am, and surprisingly, people do actually call me Annie Spaghetti. I'm a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Spanish Translation and think it is important to understand feminism and how it relates to every field of study. I absolutely love to travel and am planning to spend the next year in Ecuador honing my spanish and skipping about South America. I eventually want to move to Mexico and practice immigration law and have a bakery on the side!

I am the SafeWalk coordinator and passionately feel that this is an important program for any college campus. I'm excited to see it grow from one call a week to multiple calls a night! The WRC is a wonderful and accepting organization that approaches feminism from many angles, stretching the mind to see womens' issues in a new light. It has been an enriching experience working with the WRC, and I encourage everybody to participate in our events throughout the year

Hi! My name is Mei Lai but I just go by Mei (may) to make life easier for people. I am a second year student at the UA. Hi! I’m Julianne. I am a Graphic Design and Technology Intern here at the Women’s Resource Center. I am a Senior in the College of Fine Arts and working on getting my degree in Visual Communications. I am so excited to be working with the WRC this semester. I have already met so many amazing people! Everyone here is really nice, so don’t hesitate to stop by and see what we’re all about!
This semester I am really looking forward to re-vamping the WRC website and helping to design some of our tabling materials. I want to let everyone know what a great resource is right here on campus. We put on a ton of interesting events and you should really check them out!
Some random things that make me happy: funny movies, bright colors, Orangina (a delicious orange-flavored beverage from France), adobe design suite (super happy!), art history, music, knitting, running, swimming, and pilates.

Women Resource Centre..wat should i say abt dis unique body..i mean u can ask me nethin abt WRC....its only a couple of weeks dat i joined WRC, but i know WRC frm top to bottom..perhaps it is becuase i have got d uncanny knack to undstnd people with blink of eye, or, it cud b coz of the very open n honest folks dat i found here...I think it is both...!!

Allrite, may i say a few thngs now :)...To begin with, WRC is gr8. I repeat WRC is gr8...Gr8 in terms of work culture, gr8 in terms of enthusiam, gr8 in terms of discipline(i wish WRC wudn b too gr8 in discipline :)

WRCees have a gr8 zeal in them which everyone wld get attracted to...they wud doo the thing wat they decide n wld never loose hope...one thing that WRC has its Unity in Diversity. HELLO! My name is Jai Smith. I am a SafeWalker and a Health and Sexuality Intern with the Women’s Resource Center this year and very excited to be working with such a diverse group! I have worked with many different groups in the past, including Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, Wingspan, and EON. I am trained as an AIDS educator and am the director of the Walking Names Project (www.walkingnamesproject. org), which is in honor of my late godfather. This year I am a member of the LGBTQ Advisory Board, Pride Alliance, SPRITE, SAAF, and Q&A. I am very active in the community and very passionate about women’s and LGBTQ rights.

This year I hope to work towards increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS on campus and to help act as a catalyst between the groups I am a member of. I am very excited to be with the Women’s Resource Center and look forward to this opportunity.

Currently I am a Fund raising and Grant Writing Intern with the WRC. I am very excited to work with these amazing men and women to educate, inform, and change some people for life! I am Co-President of a campus recognized club for African American women called Sisters of Unity. I also am Desk Manager at a residence hall on campus. When I graduate May 2009, my hearts desire is to work in some type of philanthropic work. I really plan on changing the world. Just one step at a time!

Hello all! My name is Malia! I am currently the co-director of The Women's Resource Center- I have been involved with the student organization since Spring 2008. A lot of my time in the WRC is focused on working with interns, and other organizations such as: ASUA, The Feminist Majority Foundation, Arizona List, Social Justice, Tucson NOW, Planned Parenthood, Tucson's Girl Scouts, UA Young Democrats, and many MANY more! My work is dedicated in establishing the WRC's mission statement in all of our events and programs. Although, my work load is hefty, the excitement outruns the stress! My goal within the Women's Resource Center is to not only establish a paid director, but also increase our exposure on campus and off campus, we have so many upcoming events- you would be crazy to miss them! I will be heading the Million Dollar Donor project late fall, helping out with all of our event programming, and further professionalize the Women's Reource Center to the extent a full-time undergraduate student can accomplish.

I am currently a Religious Studies Senior with a minor in Women's Studies, and a second to be decided (I'm stuck between Anthropology and Political Science). My dream job is to work in humanitarian aid, become a professor, and a political advisor. In what is left in my spare time, I love to sleep for long hours. I've been playing tennis since I was 8 years old, my favorite topic of discussions include; politics, women's issues, religion-feminist theology, the economy, project runway, music, and the weather. I've been told as a young child that I will change the world, and I plan on doing doing that.

Hello, my name is Amber Adams. I am a Safe Walk intern for the UA Women's Resource Center. One night every week I await phone calls from people on campus who would like a safe, friendly walking buddy to and from different locations. Ask me about free pepper spray distributed by the WRC, which can help make a nighttime walk feel a little bit safer. I am enthusiastic about the WRC, its mission, and its many determined volunteers and interns. I will be helping in the fight to establish and maintain a paid professional director for the Women's Resource Center which is a necessary and appropriate position for any accredited institution.

In my free time I enjoy practicing capoeira (a brazilian martial art form), watching foreign films, laughing, humming to myself, and drinking mate tea. I am a feminist who likes to study and deconstruct issues of gender and race. I am very interested in the subculture and validity of sex work. Have a wonderful day!

Hi! I’m Shannon Quay and I am a Health and Sexuality intern with the Women’s Resource Center for the Fall 2008 semester. I am a senior in Public Health and I’m graduating in December! I’m excited about being a health and sexuality intern because sexuality is a great thing and being a Public Health student, prevention prevention prevention is my philosophy, so I’m excited to show students that safe sex is great sex!

I am very passionate about ending violence against women and want to work more with it in the future. I plan to backpack through Europe for a few months after graduation and want to travel through Africa someday working to end health disparities. I love spending time with family and friends above anything and my favorite thing to do is laugh!

Hey all! My name is Jackie and my WRC internship involves working on the film series committee! If you didn't already know we are showing "Live Nude Girls Unite!" Next wednesday (9/17) at the Gallagher Theatre in the Student Union Memorial Center @ the U of A!! This movie follows a group of San Francisco exotic dancers who unionize to gain better wages, sick pay, and to protect themselves against secret customer videotapes. Following the movie will be an amazing speaker and admission is free so why not come?!

Besides the WRC, I am really involved in various organizations at the U of A. I have another internship with a fitness company and I am getting certified to be a personal trainer! I am double majoring in nutritional sciences and anthropology. In particular I am really interested in sports nutrition and cultural anthropology. Over the summer I worked as an orientation leader for U of A's incoming freshman and did a bikram yoga challenge. I LOVE yoga and feel incomplete without going every week. I also like biking, roller blading and running. I am training for my first half marathon that is in the beginning of december!

Davida Larson is a Journalism senior and a Women's Studies minor at the University of Arizona. She is finishing up her summer internship with the ASUA Women's Resource Center. She hails from the teeny tiny town of Valdez, Alaska, as well as the small city of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Even though John McCain and Sarah Palin are from her two home states, she dislikes both of them profoundly. She has written for the Arizona Daily Wildcat and she was the Arts and Entertainment editor of the Aztec Press, Pima Community College's bi-weekly newspaper. One of her life's goals is to speak Spanish fluently. After graduation, she'd like to teach English in a Spanish-speaking country. Her favorite T.V. show of all time is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so much so that her fat tortoiseshell cat is named Buffy. She loves art, music, fashion and helping women to empower themselves. Her favoritest musicians of all time are Juliana Hatfield and Kristin Hersh. If she owned a house she would paint it purple with turquoise trim.

In addition to my internship here, I am a senior in the Marketing Cohort in the Eller Business College. I'll be graduating in May 2009 and taking off to Spain (sometime after that). Are we in the dark ages at the University of Arizona? According to a proposal for a professionally directed Women’s Resource Center, the University of Arizona is way behind the times. There is no doubt that there is a need on campus for a non-discriminatory organization devoted to providing resources, information, and programming for women-identified students, faculty and staff. The Daily Wildcat has reported that the U of A is “behind the times” all PAC-10 universities outside of Arizona have professionally directed women's centers. Likewise all of U of A’s peer institutions (aside from the University of Florida) have substantial women’s centers. These centers typically have 3or more full-time staff, a large space of 1,400 sq. feet and budgets well over $200,000. Contrarily, the current space that holds the UA Women’s Resource center is a mere 200 sq. feet, run by a group of students, has no paid staff and operates on a 7,000 budget from ASUA. In an interview with KVOA Carly Thomsen , author of the proposal and co director of the WRC states, “with a larger center, budget and a paid staff, we could have more programs, and I think the UA and surrounding community wants that."

Despite all of these problems the Women’s Resource Center continues to work hard to provide the campus community with four strands of continuous programming: Safe Walk, Sex Ed Workshops, A Film Series, and Self Defense Classes. Also the WRC holds famous headline-making events such the Breast Party, Take Back the Night, Women’s Herstory month, and much more. The Women’s Resource Center has developed successful internship program that has trained over 45 interns in two semesters. Also the WRC has brought in over $50,000 in outside grant money to make over 75 well-attended events possible, this unprecedented for a student-run organization. Issues relating to social justice, oppression and gender are issues that our University and Administration must care about. And right now, due to the lack of support, that’s not the message being sent to out women students. We know that we deserve better. The Women’s Resource Center has started circulating a petition to students, staff and faculty; they are hoping to get a least 3,500 signatures or approximately 10% of student support.

When you think of a sorority the term queer doesn’t often come to mind, GRL is trying to change that. GRL Queer Sorority Interest Group is attempting to become recognized by the Gamma Rho Lambda National Chapter. If GRL is recognized they will be the first queer sorority on the University of Arizona campus. Not only that but the first sorority to welcome people despite gender, sexual orientation, gender presentation, creed and ethnicity.

GRL will be holding a BBQ Fundraiser to raise funds needed for national recognition. The event will be held Saturday September 13th at the Park Student Union volleyball courts from 3-7 pm. To enjoy in both vegetarian and non –vegetarian BBQ delights GRL is asking for a minimum donation of $5. The sorority is for Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally folks. So come out and represent you or your organization's pride! Change comes from within but also through supporting those who share the same vision. The fundraiser is also sponsored by The Women's Resource Center, and the aid of The LGBT Student Affairs.

Hello! I'm Tiffany Tedesco, the Advertising and Media Intern for Fall 2008. I am thrilled to be working with this great group!

I am a senior at the University of Arizona, my major is interdisciplinary studies concentrating on Women's Studies, Geosceince, and Business. I would like to work with large corporations on social responsibility initiatives.

The WRC is a great resource for the university and I am committed to expanding visibility of the center through the media and community participation in programming . I hope to be apart of the team who professionalizes the WRC and finds a paid director. I wanted to devote my time this year to contributing my campus community through a group who represents my view points!

For fun I love riding my bike, visiting my family and dog in Irvine, CA, thrift store shopping and vintage shopping, reading, swimming, and fighting for women's initiatives and the protection of animals and the environment.
